We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Chronox Manek, member of the Executive Committee of the IAACA, Chief Ombudsman of the Ombudsman Commission, Papua New Guinea, on October 1 due to after a long illness.
Mr. Manek was appointed as Public Solicitor in 1999, as Public Prosecutor in 2001, and as Chief Ombudsman in 2008. He also served as co-Chairman of the International Association of Prosecutors World Conference; Director of the Asia Crime Prevention Foundation; Director of the International Ombudsman Institute; Vice-Chairman of the Pacific Ombudsman Alliance and Executive Committee Member of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities.
Mr. Manek was a hero of the anti-corruption arena. He gained a reputation for campaigning against corruption by public figures and was the target of many attacks. He conducted several investigations into high profile leaders. And after that, he survived being shot in an assassination attempt in 2009. Despite his illness, he continued to serve in the job until ill health forced him to step aside in September this year.
The passing of Mr. Manek is not only a great loss for the Papua New Guinea, but also to the anti-corruption community. It is quite a loss to everybody. We hereby send our thoughts and prayers to Mr. Chronox Manek’s wife, his family, and all those who loved him. We will miss Mr. Chronox Manek immensely.
